Hi,
I agree with you, putting periods in file names except before the
extension is not good, but it was the method used
by the author of tablor.sty. ( strange to put a period after an
extension )
But it was a bug in the last version of metapost. The developers
update metapost with the next version 1.208
in texlive 2009.
