That's a bit strange ... This file should be found in /usr/local/ 
texlive/2008/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/tetex, with a few others.

	sudo updmap-sys --syncwithtrees

is the recommended means. First check what the directory /usr/local/ 
texlive/2008/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/tetex contains. I see there:

-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel  10717  3 Jan  2006 dvipdfm35.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel   8693  3 Jan  2006 dvips35.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel    223  3 Jan  2006 mathpple.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel    299  3 Jan  2006 mt-belleek.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel    872  3 Jan  2006 mt-plus.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel    634  3 Jan  2006 mt-yy.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel  11208  3 Jan  2006 pdftex35.map
-rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel  12758  3 Jan  2006 ps2pk35.map
