The credit is due to Donald Knuth, cf. page 130 of The TeXbook,
Chapter 16 "Typing Math Formulas."
The single right apostrophe -> ' <- should do the same in math mode as
$^{\prime}$.
I would advise anyone who is interested in TeX to acquire the TeXbook,
simply to have the definitive resource on hand.
