Just to be on the safe side: which version of gnuplot is supposed to
be used with pgfplots?

I consistently get this error:

<log>
set format "\%.7e"; set samples 25; plot [x=-5:5] (-x**5 - 242)
                     ^
"testPlot.filesuffix.gnuplot", line 2: ';' expected
</log>

I am currently using gnuplot 4.2 patchlevel 3 (is it 4.2.3?).
Everything goes away if I add a second semi-colon after lines 2107 and
2113 in pgfplot.code.tex which are

set format "\%.7e";
