To the original poster: are you really sure there isn't \pdfoutput=1  
anywhere in one of the input file read during your LaTeX run? Are you  
calling a package with a pdfTeX-specific option (like  
\usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx})? That could maybe set \pdfoutput=1  
without your knowing so.
