I'd expect though that this <filename>.log file is the standard tex  
log file that Peter referred to, not any sort of Texmaker/TeXShop/ 
other GUI log. If you open it in a text editor, it will probably say  
something like

This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.6)

at the beginning.
