What were these instructions? Did you, when installing into the  
system's TeX trees, run a final 'sudo texhash'? And what are the  
error messages from TeX?

I'm not a LyX user, but I can't imagine that it works different fron  
any other TeX front-end, i.e. it relies on a well maintained TeX  
installation.
