I have only
pdfTeX 3.141592-1.40.3-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.6)
pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.6)
and can't reproduce the error with a LaTeX test file that starts with
a percent sign ...
METAPOST is a different thing: I never had to use it.
