Yep.
That's one of the things which I really miss 'bout my NeXT Cube having
finally given up the ghost --- can't do rough drafts in WriteNow.app
on it, w/ Webster.app available at a <command>=....
Anyway, the biggest reason for having authors typeset stuff as people
have alluded to is that finding graphic designers / compositors to
typeset mathematics is well-nigh impossible, training them is almost
as difficult, and the pay differential which such people demand is not
(quite) insignificant.
For those who still like the idea of hand-written mathematics, Dmitri
Linde's InstantTeX.app on NeXTstep actually allowed for math character
input using a graphics tablet, and there are other, newer systems
which now allow this such as InftyEditor and MathJournal --- FFES
could probably be compiled for Mac OS X.
