Yes. (When \input_mtx_file wants to input the MTX file it first calls
\fromany, which looks for the font metrics in the formats MTX, PL, AFM, and
VPL, in that order, and creates the MTX if it didn't already exist.)

It won't spoil it, because it all happens _inside_ an \install[raw]font
command.
